PLASTIC POLLUTION

Confronting the Quintuple Threat:

In the realm of environmental woes, five major challenges emerge:

1.plastic pollution:

Plastic pollution is the tangible and omnipresent nature of plastic pollution that demands our focus, illustrating the profound impact on our surroundings and ecosystems.

2.electronic waste:

Electronic waste is emerging as a serious public health and environmental issue in India. India is the "Third largest electronic waste producer in the world", approximately 2 million tons of e-waste are generated annually and an undisclosed amount of e-waste is imported from other countries around the world.

3.urban air quality:

From contaminating our environment to damaging our health, poor air quality is a major global challenge. No one is immune to the negative effects of air pollution, but many think this shared burden doesn’t affect their lives.

4.water scarcity:

About two billion people worldwide don’t have access to safe drinking water today , and roughly half of the world’s population is experiencing severe water scarcity for at least part of the year . These numbers are expected to increase, exacerbated by climate change and population growth .

5.food wastage:

In India, 40% of the food wasted is equivalent to nearly 89,000 crore/year. This is equivalent to nearly 1% of the GDP which is depleted in the form of food wastage in India. What might look like a harmless wastage of food deeply impacts the agricultural sector and affects the nation's economy.

In this blog, I would like to share how I decided on an assumptive problem statement for my UI/UX Capstone portfolio project. I started to look around and think about five problems that needed to be resolved, as shown in the above. Among those problems I will go though the plastic pollution as my capstone project.

problem statement:

In the labyrinth of modern-day challenges, plastic pollution casts a vast shadow across our planet, from bustling city streets to the serene depths of the oceans. My journey as a UI/UX design student has led me to confront this issue head-on, revealing its pervasive impact on wildlife, natural habitats, and human health.

Harnessing UI/UX for Environmental Change

As a proponent of UI/UX design, I am convinced that thoughtful design can address and mitigate global issues, including plastic pollution. My capstone project is dedicated to developing digital solutions that facilitate recycling, promote the use of reusable items, and raise awareness about the detrimental effects of plastic pollution.

Our Research Plan

There are two types of research

  1. Secondary Research/Desk Research
  2. Primary research

1.Secondary Research/Desk Research: In the secondary research, we will be gathering the prior research findings, existing data available, or relevant research information for the capstone project, which includes online research, books, magazines, research reports, and newspapers. This research provides us with a thorough understanding of the issues, which offers us a strong base for our primary research.

2.Primary research: From the insights received from the secondary research, we will be moving on to perform the primary research. Primary research is of two types

   1.Qualitative research

   2. Quantitative research.

  • Qualitative research is a descriptive method where we will be performing in-depth interviews to understand the user’s goals, pain points, interests, and values.
  • From the insights received from the qualitative research, we will be performing quantitative research in the form of surveys, which will help us learn and validate the data received from the qualitative research and give us a more broader and thorough understanding of the problem or the challenges faced.

                                                THANK YOU
